Frequently asked questions
We want you and your friends to enjoy your firework display, so we have compiled a list of the most commonly asked questions relating to firework safety, UK law, pets and general ‘good practice’. Follow these simple guidelines and your private pyrotechnic extravaganza will be hitch-free.
- A torch
- A bucket or two of water
- A closed metal box to store the fireworks
- Eye protection and gloves
- Suitable supports and launchers if you’re setting off catherine wheels or rockets
- Firework Lighters (Portfires)
- A bucket of soft earth to put fireworks in if you are unable to bury them
- Keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off.
- Make sure your dog is walked earlier in the day before the fireworks start.
- Close all windows and doors, and block off cat flaps to stop pets escaping and to keep noise to a minimum.
- Draw the curtains, and if the animals are used to the sounds of TV or radio, switch them on (but not too loudly) in order to block out some of the noise of the fireworks.
- Small pets e.g. rabbits, hamsters, mice and birds, are the most vulnerable to fireworks – make sure you:
- Take hutches/cages into a garage or shed, or, a quiet room indoors if possible.
- Give your pet extra bedding to burrow into so it feels safe.
- If you are aware that horses, ponies or cattle are housed nearby, ensure you let the owners know, in advance that you intend to set off fireworks.
- If you know your animals react badly to loud noises perhaps consider moving them for the night.
- Only one person should be responsible for setting off fireworks
- Do not drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks
- Light fireworks at arm’s length, using a taper or firework lighter
- Make sure everyone stands well back watching the fireworks (Spectator distances are provided on each firework)
- Never go back to a firework that has been lit – even if it hasn’t gone off it could still explode
- Supervise children with sparklers and never give them to a child under the age of five
- Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves
- Put used sparklers hot end down into a bucket of sand or water
- Keep pets indoors
- Let neighbours know that you will be setting off fireworks, especially if they are elderly
- Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them
- Never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire
- Take care around bonfires
