Official Firework Display Team heading back to South Korea!

Back in May we announced that our official Firework Display Team would be on tour this summer at the Pohang International Fireworks Festival in South Korea. The team worked for 5 long days aboard large barges at a port in Pohang before they sailed out to Yeongildae Beach. Our team’s show brought a mighty applause from the thousands watching from the beach and surrounding closed off streets.

FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014

World Cup 2014

Football fans rejoice the World Cup 2014 starts this week!

The tournament kicks off on Thursday 12th June with host nation Brazil taking on Croatia at 5pm BST. 32 teams will battle it out for football supremacy over the next 32 days. Roy Hodgson, the coach of the England national team is expecting a tough opening fixture against Italy, who knocked out England at the last European Championships in 2012. This time it is not quite the fact of facing one of our European foes that is a daunting prospect, it is the place in which will host the game. Manaus is the capital city of the state of Amazonas in the north of Brazil. It lies close to the Amazon Rainforest and is expected to be very humid when the two teams face each other. Hopefully our lads will overcome the conditions and begin their campaign with a win! Read the rest of this entry »

New Website Coming Soon!

A couple of weeks ago we made an announcement that we are having a new website built for us. This website won’t be just a static website but a modern, responsive website built on the foundations of HTML 5. We are all very excited here at Black Cat and Standard Fireworks as each week through the design process we get to see live mock ups of the website. It’s looking very smart so far and we believe we will have the best website in the fireworks industry once it goes live!

Eden Agency is the name of the team behind our new website and they have been building amazing technical solutions since 2007. In February we met with Digital Director Craig Gilchrist and Web Designer Rhi Moxey to go over what we’d like from the website and the general look and feel of it. We decided we would like our new website to have an online based community feel to it where firework enthusiasts can join in on blog articles by providing comments and sharing their opinions and stories on social networking sites. We hope to provide a friendly online social area where you can learn more about what is going on in the fireworks world and of course involving Black Cat and Standard Fireworks.

There will be some interesting new additions to the website as well which we can not reveal yet but we are sure that they will be well received by all firework enthusiasts. So stay tuned and look out for an announcement in due time!

Chinese New Year 2014

Chinese New Year

There are many myths surrounding the invention and original use of fireworks but the most well known tale relates to Chinese New Year.  It is said that an interesting flame was produced when a Chinese cook accidently spilled saltpetre, which is an ingredient in gunpowder, into a cooking fire. This mixed with other ingredients used to create gunpowder such as charcoal and sulphur burned with a pretty flame in a fire, however once it was wrapped in a bamboo tube the mixture caused an explosion when set alight. British Musical Fireworks Championships 2013

British Musical Firework Championships

2013 sees a change to the British Musical Fireworks Championships. The magnificent pyro-musical displays are still staged in Southport; however the firing site has been moved from Kings Gardens to the home of the Southport Flower Show, Victoria Park. This is because of redevelopment being undertaken at Kings Gardens. This year’s competition runs from Friday 4th October to Sunday 6th October. The harmonious marriage between fireworks and music should yet again lighten the skies above Southport and bring joyous entertainment for families, couples and firework fans alike. GlobalFest 2013 Review

GlobalFest

On Friday 16th August 2013, the Hunan Jixiu Fireworks Manufacturing & Display Co. Ltd of China opened the Trico Homes International Firework Festival as part of GlobalFest 2013. The theme of their show was “The End of a Hero” and was based around the late years of Qi Dynasty (221-206 BC). It told a story of the hero’s braveness and love. The fireworks showcased interchanged between being loud and powerful to represent the hero’s braveness and then soft, elegant and beautiful in relation to the hero’s love. The show included the compulsory piece of music “Chanson Theme” from the stage adaptation of A Clockwork Orange by Danny Luntz. This music was compulsory for all designers from each of the four nations presenting a show at the festival. The Chinese firework display opened up with the compulsory music and then traditional Chinese music was heard. During the display there was a wide array of pyrotechnics on view including some beautiful gold horsetails and a stunning multi-coloured water carpet, which lit up the lake at Elliston Park. An insight into the use of Digital Firing Systems

Darkness has fallen, your fireworks are set up, your audience are waiting and you have your portfire/taper. This is your time to shine as a firework display operator. In the Firework Code we stress that it is majorly important to light fireworks at arm’s length using a taper or firework lighter (portfire). Tapers are often what you will find in a selection box and look like joss sticks. They burn with the slightest of glows rather than produce an actual flame. It is always important to hold them in a gloved hand and they are recommended for use with garden fireworks. It is also just as important to follow the instructions on each firework and to read the instructions carefully using a torch or lamp – never a naked flame.

In an International Firework Display Competition the firing of a show is entirely different. Digital firing systems are the choice of most firework display companies now and we had the chance to be aboard the Barge at the Honda Celebration of Light in Vancouver, the largest off shore firework display competition in the world to witness the firing of a show. Three digital firing systems were used in this instance to fire each display at the event and also used to fire three rounds of salutes to entice the crowds down to English Bay before each show. The system was also used to fire a huge piece of lance work which showcased the logo of the main sponsor of the event, which was Honda.

Honda Celebration of Light 2013 Review

The Barge

Thailand Fireworks brought the curtain down with a bang at this year’s Honda Celebration of Light in Vancouver in front of an approximate 400,000 people, the largest crowd of the competition.

Honda Celebration of Light, the world’s largest off shore firework display competition, is staged in Vancouver just off English Bay. It’s evident to see just how big the event is with a large police presence and main streets closed to vehicles so the large crowds can make their way down to find a spot to watch the spectacle take place. The event is free to the public and is primarily aimed at increasing tourism to Vancouver. Read the rest of this entry »
