GlobalFest 2013 Review
On Friday 16th August 2013, the Hunan Jixiu Fireworks Manufacturing & Display Co. Ltd of China opened the Trico Homes International Firework Festival as part of GlobalFest 2013. The theme of their show was ‚ÄúThe End of a Hero‚ÄĚ and was based around the late years of Qi Dynasty (221-206 BC). It told a story of the hero‚Äôs braveness and love. The fireworks showcased interchanged between being loud and powerful to represent the hero‚Äôs braveness and then soft, elegant and beautiful in relation to the hero‚Äôs love. The show included the compulsory piece of music ‚ÄúChanson Theme‚ÄĚ from the stage adaptation of A Clockwork Orange by Danny Luntz. This music was compulsory for all designers from each of the four nations presenting a show at the festival. The Chinese firework display opened up with the compulsory music and then traditional Chinese music was heard. During the display there was a wide array of pyrotechnics on view including some beautiful gold horsetails and a stunning multi-coloured water carpet, which lit up the lake at Elliston Park. An insight into the use of Digital Firing Systems
Darkness has fallen, your fireworks are set up, your audience are waiting and you have your portfire/taper. This is your time to shine as a firework display operator. In the Firework Code we stress that it is majorly important to light fireworks at arm‚Äôs length using a taper or firework lighter (portfire). Tapers are often what you will find in a selection box and look like joss sticks. They burn with the slightest of glows rather than produce an actual flame. It is always important to hold them in a gloved hand and they are recommended for use with garden fireworks. It is also just as important to follow the instructions on each firework and to read the instructions carefully using a torch or lamp ‚Äď never a naked flame.
In an International Firework Display Competition the firing of a show is entirely different. Digital firing systems are the choice of most firework display companies now and we had the chance to be aboard the Barge at the Honda Celebration of Light in Vancouver, the largest off shore firework display competition in the world to witness the firing of a show. Three digital firing systems were used in this instance to fire each display at the event and also used to fire three rounds of salutes to entice the crowds down to English Bay before each show. The system was also used to fire a huge piece of lance work which showcased the logo of the main sponsor of the event, which was Honda.
