Chinese New Year 2012

Chinese New Year Celebrations

Chinese New Year this year is on 23rd January 2012, as the Chinese New Year welcomes in the year of the Male Black Water Dragon.

Regional customs and traditions vary widely in for the Chinese New Year, however it is traditional that all families clean the house thoroughly to sweep away any misfortune and make way for the good incoming luck.

This year is the 4709th year of the Chinese calendar.

Due to legends and tales of a monster that would attack villagers on the Chinese New Year, it is celebrated with the colour red as it was believed that this monster was afraid of the colour,
Red envelopes containing money are given out at the start of each year to bring good fortune.

Fireworks made from bamboo shoots and gunpowder were traditionally used to scare away evil spirits. In more modern times firecrackers have been used as they are known for their loud bangs – they have also become a large part of the celebrations due to their symbolisation of joyful times.

London New Years Eve Fireworks

The Mayor’s Midnight Fireworks display by the Thames is set to be fantastic this year, with over 250,000 people coming to watch the firework display last year it is expected to be similar numbers this time around.
The viewing areas usually fill up 2-3 hours before the show starts so make sure you get there early to get the best spots.

Radio 1’s DJ Nihal will be putting on an exclusive show for all those who attend – starting at 10pm and continuing after the firework display.

Make sure you wrap up warm for the show as it will be cold. Meeting friends and family before venturing out to view points is advised as the crowds could mean that it is hard to meet up once there.

Tickets are not on sale for the show, it is a free event, so please do not accept any if they are offered to you.
